We'll be there! Is your work closely related to research, development or operating the environmental information systems? Do you (intend to) use the information provided by these systems in your own work? Above all, would you like to share your ideas and needs for improving the IT infrastructure and novel ways of using the results with leading european researchers?

If the answer to any of the questions above is YES, please join our "Technology and economy of European environmental information space" networking session on ICT 2008 in Lyon!

IMPORTANT: Our Networking Session is on day 2 (26-11-2008), from 11:00 to 12:30. The size of the room assigned to our session depends on the number of people interested in the session, and this number is estimated on the basis of the comments you leave on the networking session web page. If you intend to join us, please follow the link above and add a simple comment of the type "I'll be there". If you are also interested in presenting your own ideas, please read on.

About our networking session (26. November 2008)

SANY treesOur strategies to conserve and develop the environment in a favorable way often depend on detailed knowledge not only about single observable properties, but about ecosystems, its parts, relationships, and dependencies. Building such knowhow was often a tedious task, as data acquisition has been expensive and data integration a labor-intensive task of conversions and transformations, often implying information losses.

With this in mind, SANY IP partners proposed a networking session called "Technology and economy of European environmental information space". Although officially initiated by the SANY IP, this networking session is open for everyone interested in technological and economic sustainability of the emerging European environmental information systems. We are looking for answers to following questions:

  • Which (new) applications really require integration and better availability of existing environmental monitoring systems?
  • Which (new) applications require even more, better, or simply different type of monitoring systems?
  • Who is expected to actually pay the bills, and how much are these users really able/ready to pay?
  • Which existing or emerging technologies could be used to build the missing infrastructure?
  • Which major technical and non-technical issues remain to be solved?

Call for presentations

The participation is also possible through keynote presentation(s). Our idea is to have an overview/introduction to the session, followed by 2-3 presentations about existing, emerging or yet to be developed technology, and 2-3 presentations about the user requirements, novel use cases and/or sustainable business models. Due to short time, we can not accept more than six presentations a 10-15 minutes. Remaining 1/2 hour will be reserved for discussion.

The rules for presentations are:

  • The focus must not be on current research projects, but on lessons learned and ideas and needs for future projects.
  • Presentations should be short (10-15 minutes) and discuss one topic you consider important. Some examples: "From OGC standards to SEIS", "security in large sensor networks", "Community-driven sensor networks", "Value and price of information", "Quality of information in heterogeneous sensor networks", "the role of data fusion", etc.
  • Only the presentations announced on the above web page not later than November 15-th have a chance to be accepted. (A summary with 2-3 sentences is enough)
  • We also need your contact information, so please send the summary to Session organiser per e-mail as well.

In case you wish to contribute some illustration to the discussion, please send 1-2 power point slides or images to Session organiser). For all other questions related to this networking session, please follow the link below:

The ICT 2008 event is a must-be event for everyone interested in european ICT research and development. Our networking session is particularly interesting for researchers, developers, integrators, operators, and users of the environmental information systems.
