SANY Newsletter 5: Three months to ICT 2008

Dear reader,

Three months from now, the "who is who" of European ICT researchers and policy makers shall meet in Lyon and discuss the research agenda for the next decade. SANY partners proposed a discussion on sustainability of the European environmental information space.

This newsletter includes:

About ICT 2008

Technology and economy of European environmental information space

V1 sany demonstrations (pre-announcement)

About SANY newsletter

About ICT 2008

The biennial ICT Event (formerly called the "IST Event") is the most important forum for discussing research and public policy in information and communication technologies at European level. The Event brings together researchers and innovators, policy and business decision-makers working in the field of digital technologies. The ICT Event:

Presents Europe's future priorities for research funding in the ICT area

Examines crucial issues of public policy for stimulating innovation through ICT development and uptake

Creates opportunities to establish research and business partnerships and simply keep up to date in what is happening in various ICT research fields.

The ICT Event is organised by the European Commission's Directorate General for the Information Society and Media and is usually hosted by the current Presidency of the European Union. This year, the ICT event will take place from 25 to 27 November in Lyon, France.

LINK: ICT 2008 home page

Technology and economy of European environmental information space

Apart from being the key European ICT event in 2008, ICT 2008 offers the unique chance to discuss the European research agenda for the next decade. One topic that we would like to discuss on ICT 2008 is the long-term technical and economic perspective of the emerging "European environmental information space".

With this in mind, SANY IP partners proposed a networking session called "Technology and economy of European environmental information space". Although officially initiated by the SANY IP, this networking session is open for everyone interested in technological and economic sustainability of the emerging European environmental information systems. The proposed discussion topics include:

which "killer applications" require shared European environmental information space?

what is the acceptable price level of information and services for these applications?

How to survive and flourish in an open information space? (Sustainable business models)

what can we build upon today (architecture, re-usable services, specifications, standards)?

which major technical issues remain to be solved?

which role will emerging sensor technology (moving sensors, ad hoc networks, smart sensors... etc) play in this context?

Please follow the link below to support our networking proposal and share your thoughts on this interesting topic with the rest of the ICT community.

The second (v1) development cycle of the SANY IP is nearing its end. It's show time again!

This autumn, SANY partners from SP4, SP5 and SP6 ("validation sub projects") shall present the results of the v1 SANY development cycle in three separate public demonstrations dedicated to "air quality", "marine risks" and "urban geo hazards".

Detailed information on these events shall be announced in next SANY newsletter.

What is OGC TC?

The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc (OGC) is an international industry consortium of 364 companies, government agencies and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available interface specifications. OpenGIS® Specifications support interoperable solutions that "geo-enable" the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.

The OGC membership process is operationally organized into groups and subgroups, each group having a specified role and level of responsibility. There are three major groups, called Committees: The Technical, the Planning and the Strategic Management Advisory Committees.

The Technical Committee is responsible for all aspects of the formal consensus OGC specification process and provides an open forum for professional discussion of issues and items related to the consensus development and/or evaluation and approval of OpenGIS specifications.

SANY and OSIRIS at OGC TC meeting in Potsdam (2-6 June 2008)

SANY has strong interest in OGC standardization, and actively participates in several OGC working groups. This OGC TC meeting is of particular interest for SANY, as is allows technical discussion on v1 of the SANY architecture and services.
