SANY Newsletter 7: SANY/SSE training

Dear reader,

SANY treesThree weeks from now, the SANY IP will organise a "SANY/SSE" training event. This event is co-sponsored and hosted by ESA/ESRIN on their premises in Frascati/Italy.

The SANY/SSE training concentrates on compatibility of the SensorSA (which primarily targets the in-situ sensors) with IT-infrastructure and Geospatial Information Services used by Earth Observation community.

Participation is free of charge and open to all interested parties within a limit of available places. Please read on for more information and instructions for registration.

This newsletter includes:

  • About SANY training events
  • SANY/SSE training in Frascati (October 28-th-30-th 2008)
  • More SANY related events
  • About SANY newsletter

About SANY training events

The SANY integrated project focuses on interoperability, architecture, and generic services for in-situ sensors and sensor networks. Our work plan foresees intensive interaction with GMES community, with special attention given to demonstration and training events. SANY partners decided to hold two additional demonstrations in November and December 2008. These events are announced below in the "More SANY related events" section.

On the training side, SANY consortium already organised two events. The first one was dedicated to Sensor Web enablement (SWE), and the second to use of SensorSA and SWE in the GEOSS context. Results of these two events are available online:

Four more training events are planned within next 12 months. The third event, which concentrates on use of SANY results in GMES/ESA context is described below.

The forth SANY training will take place on February 11-th and 12-th 2008 in Vienna, Austria, with the intention to teach the participants how to build their own SWE- and SensorSA-compliant enviromental monitoring systems.

SANY/SSE training in Frascati (October 28-th-30-th 2008)

Every year, the ESA organises a Service Support Environment (SSE) Service Providers workshop for current and potential Service Providers. This workshop is dedicated to exchanging the experiences and lessons learned from previous experiences and preparing the next activities aimed at extending the functionality of the ESA SSE platform.

SANY/SSE elementsThis year, the SSE SPs workshop will be extended to host the Sensors Anywhere (SANY) training event. The SANY/SSE training has following main objectives:

  • Position SANY and in-situ sensor access with respect to GEOSS, INSPIRE and GMES and to similar work done on the GMES space component,
  • Present the architectural approach chosen and standards selected for the Coordinated Data Access System (CDS) of the GMES Space Component (GSC) for Earth Observation (EO) sensor data access,
  • Present the architectural approach chosen and standards selected in the SANY Sensor Service Architecture for in-situ data access,
  • Demonstrate, based on current intermediate SANY results, the use of OGC Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) and other standards through the ESA Service Support Environment (SSE),
  • Compare the above mentioned EO and in-situ architectural approaches; assess their degree of convergence and identify further actions to improve synergies and convergence, possibly with support of the FP7 Coordinating Action “GIGAS”.

The participation on both workshops is free of charge within a limit of available places. Please follow the links below to learn more and register for the workshops:

Other SANY related events

For those of you that tend to agree with Mark Twain, we are happy to announce two more demonstration events:

  • ARC will present the Cascading SOS and SensorSA Data acquisition System on "Sensing the World" workshop. On the evening of the first workshop day, Mihai Bartha and Thomas Bleier will also demonstrate the working of these two services.
  • SP5 partners plan to attend the Arc Manche conference (December 3-rd 2008, Folkestone/UK). If organisers agree, this event will be used to demonstrate the SP5 (bathing water) application prototype.

If you do speak German, join us at the the SP4 (Air quality) demonstration in Vienna on November 4-th 2008. More information on SANY demonstration events is available in the SANY Newsletter No 6.

In addition to demonstration and training events, SANY also initiated a networking session on ICT 2008. "Our" networking session is called "Technology and economy of European environmental information space", and we are currently looking for interesting presentations. Covering the "technology" part should be comparatively easy, but reaching the right speakers for the "economy" part may be tricky. If you have a great business idea that requires a fully functional European environmental information service economy, please either leave a note on ICT web site, or contact the SANY project manager per e-mail.

About SANY newsletter

Sensors Anywhere Integrated Project (SANY IP) is an FP6 Integrated Project (contract number 0033564) co-funded by the Information Society and Media DG of the European Commission within the RTD activities of the Thematic Priority Information Society Technologies.

SANY newsletter is the main external communication medium of the SANY project. Its aim is to inform the decision makers, fellow researches, producers and users of environmental information systems and all other people interested in the subject of environmental monitoring on the progress of the project and on events organized by the SANY consortium.
