SANY newsletter 3: Results of the SANY baseline implementation

Dear reader,

SANY treesIt's spring again; time to show the results of the "SANY baseline implementation", and hear how it fits your expectations. First two "SANY spring 2008" events are scheduled for May 2008 and described in this newsletter.

This newsletter includes:

  • FP6 IST “monitoring” cluster
  • GEOSS workshop on Sensor Web Enablement (May 15-16 2008, Geneva/Ch)
  • SANY v0 demonstration event (May 20 2008, Vienna/AT)
  • OGC TC meeting (June 02-06 2008, Potsdam/De)
  • About SANY newsletter

SANY, OSIRIS and the IST “monitoring” cluster

SANY IP is a part of an informal cluster of projects originating from the IST-2005-2.5.12 FP6 call and working on sensor networks technology. Related projects include DYVINE, EU-FIRE, INTAMAP, SCIER, STARRS, Warmer, WINSOC, and the OSIRIS IP.

As two biggest projects in the “monitoring” cluster, SANY and OSIRIS IPs have strong common interest in standardization of the sensor network interfaces. Consequently, two consortia decided to exchange and harmonize their ideas on improving and extending the SWE specifications and “52 North” software implementation.

As a side effect, SANY and OSIRIS (possibly accompanied by some of the above mentioned STREPS) shall jointly attend and co-organise a number of events related to sensor network standardization. First such event is the upcoming GEOSS SWE workshop, which is described below.

GEOSS workshop on Sensor Web Enablement (May 15-16 2008, Geneva/Ch)

Second SANY “training event” concentrates on the role of Sensor Web Enablement in GEOSS:
“The Sensor Web presents a paradigm in which the Internet is evolving into an active sensing macro instrument. Based on internationally adopted standards, the Sensor Web accomplishes the necessary requirements to ensure interoperability among its various components. Sensor Web software components and services work interactively in arbitrary application domains.”

This event is jointly organized by GEO-Task DA07-04 and the European Commission through two integrated projects focussing on in-situ sensor networks: SANY and OSIRIS.

SANY v0 demonstration event (May 20 2008, Vienna/AT)

SANY SP4 pilot SANY demonstration events primarily target the decision makers and operators of environmental monitoring networks. In order to assure an ongoing dialogue with potential users of SANY results, separate events for SP4 (air quality), SP5 (marine risk) and SP6 (geo hazards) are foreseen at the end of each development cycle.

The first public demonstration of SANY results shall be organised by ARC in Vienna/Austria. with aim to show results of the SANY “baseline implementation” in the context of air quality monitoring sub-project (SP4). The intention of this meeting is to show how SANY software can be used in air monitoring and discuss the direction of the SANY project with potential users and operators of the environmental monitoring systems.
Note: The event will be held in German. Participation is free of charge, within a limit of available places (first come - first served). Please follow the link below for more details.

OGC TC meeting (June 02-06 2008, Potsdam/De)

Next OGC technical committee meeting takes place in Potsdam, Germany. SANY and OSIRIS use this opportunity to discuss mid-term project results with OGC experts.

In addition to presentations and discussions in various working groups, SANY participates in the OGC Interoperability Day. The OGC Interoperability Day provides good insight into the Open Geospatial Consortium, recent projects and activities, collaboration options, and recent developments. Participation on Interoperability Day is free of charge and open to all interested parties.

Details on the SANY participation at Potsdam OGC TC meeting will be the subject of a separate newsletter.

About SANY newsletter

Sensors Anywhere Integrated Project (SANY IP) is an FP6 Integrated Project (contract number 0033564) co-funded by the Information Society and Media DG of the European Commission within the RTD activities of the Thematic Priority Information Society Technologies.

SANY newsletter is the main external communication medium of the SANY project. Its aim is to inform the decision makers, fellow researches, producers and users of environmental information systems and all other people interested in the subject of environmental monitoring on the progress of the project and on events organised by the SANY consortium.

SANY newsletters are archived on the SANY web-page:
