Marine Pollution Risk Management Workshop

Event summary:

Shellfisheries operate in coastal and estuarine waters subject to fluctuating water quality, and operators must manage their harvesting to optimise supplies of compliant shellfish to customers.

Developments in low-cost sensing technology, coupled with advanced IT and communications, have allowed novel decision support techniques to be deployed. This workshop will present these advances and their practical application to shellfishery management, and explore how these can assist operations within a challenging regulatory environment.

From GIS & Sensor Data to Web Maps (Training)

This hands-on training will cover the complete cartographic workflow for the Web:

basic data access and symbolisation with the Quatum GIS;
map service creation with "Publish to Web" plugin;
advanced representation with cartographic rules;
creating more expressive maps with cartographic rules defining patterns for spatial features, SVG point symbols, and diagrams;
accessing and symbolizing sensor data with colour maps and contours

The training will take place at the Institute of Cartography, ETH Zurich

The workshop in conjunction with Ocean Business 2009 event (http://www.oceanbusiness.com) will give an
overview of the state of the art in environmental risk management tools, sensors aimed for water quality monitoring, and meeting the information need for implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD).

Identify synergies between ongoing EU projects within environmental risk

"Marine Environmental Risk Management" workshop intends to showcase the state of the art and emerging capabilities in Marine Environmental Risk Management and to highlight opportunities for the development of future applications.

Building environmental monitoring systems with SensorSA

Sensor Service Architecture (SensorSA) developed by SANY IP allows building of complete Environmental Monitoring Networks (EMNs) from standard-compliant components.

This training will teach the participants which SensorSA-compliant software components are available, and how to configure and deploy them. Furthermore, the workshop will show how OGC Sensor Web Enablement services are used within SensorSA, and how to build a complete SensorSA-compliant Environmental Monitoring Network.

Most of the software used on this training event is available (as open source) either from 52 north, or from the SANY consortium. Workshop participants will be given a chance to get a hands-on experience with the software during the workshop, and to continue experimenting with it at home. Please bring a laptop with you.

SANY consortium warns the participants that the software developed within SANY is considered experimental, and therefore not fit for immediate commercial deployment.

SSE & SANY workshop 08

Most of the analysis of the Earth Observation (EO) service industry done in the last years shows that the Value Added Companies produce the final deliverable with an enormous effort and have to deal with many data providers.

To overcome this problem and be ready to face new challenges - in particular set by the GMES perspective - ESA is currently running projects aimed at integrating new EO services, from multiple sources and providers, into the Service Support Environment (SSE), a neutrally managed, open and distributed platform that streamlines the definition and prototyping of EO and Geospatial Information Services.

In order to maximize the return from this initiative, ESA wishes to invite current and potential Service Providers to a dedicated workshop to draw lessons learnt from previous experiences and prepare the next activities to come by looking at International scenarios and perspectives. To this effect the 2008 SSE SPs workshop will be extended to host the Sensors Anywhere (SANY) workshop.

This is a second public demonstration with aim to show currently available results of the prototype applications developed within SANY Project in the contest of air quality monitoring sub-project (SP4).

At this event, we shall demonstrate the use of the SANY software and Sensor Service Architecture in air monitoring, and discuss the direction of the SANY project with potential users and operators of the environmental monitoring systems. In particular, we shall address following questions:

What is SensorSA; why do I need it; how does it fit into GEOSS/GMES/INSPIRE/etc..; how does it relate to OGC? (introduction)
What are the advantages of SensorSA for application builders and end users (demo: SP4 quality assurance application)
How can we pre-process the data and improve the information flow in SensorSA (demo: cascading SOS and "formula 3" time-series algebra)
How to build a standard-based and self-configuring environmental monitoring system (demo: plug-and-measure with SensorSA data acquisition system)

This event demonstrates the use of SANY technology in the context of "Marine risk" sub project (SP5). The baseline SP5 application ("SANY Bathing Water Forecast Tool") calculates the probability of Risk of Exceedance of a threshold value for E-coli contamination.

The demonstration is followed by a training session where end users are shown how to use the SP5 application.

GEOSS has the objective to continuously monitor the state of the earth in order to increase knowledge and understanding of our planet and its processes. Being a system of system, GEOSS has to master the challenge of integrating heterogeneous systems across institutional and political boundaries. Timely delivery of earth observation data is a key aspect in identifying potential natural and human threats, such as tornados, tsunamis, wild fires, or algae blooms.

Data from in-situ or remote sensing devices forms the basis for analyzing gradual processes, such as increasing drought, water shortages, or rising sea levels. The Sensor Web presents a paradigm in which the Internet is evolving into an active sensing macro instrument. Based on internationally adopted standards, the Sensor Web accomplishes the necessary requirements to ensure interoperability among its various components. Sensor Web software components and services work interactively in arbitrary application domains.
