ESSI15/GI11 Web Sensors session

"In the next century, planet earth will don an electronic skin. It will use the Internet as a scaffold to support and transmit its sensations. This skin is already being stitched together. It consists of millions of embedded electronic measuring devices: thermostats, pressure gauges, pollution detectors, cameras, microphones, glucose sensors, EKGs, electroencephalographs. These will probe and monitor cities and endangered species, the atmosphere, our ships, highways and fleets of trucks, our conversations, our bodies--even our dreams." Ten years later, the low-cost miniaturized sensors and wireless sensor nodes are on a way to become truly ubiquitous, but the vision of a fully fledged electronic skin is still a remote dream. The aim of this session is to discuss the factors that have so-far prevented the establishment of the "electronic skin", analyze the recent developments, and propose the agenda for achieving the Murray's vision in a technologically feasible, economically sane and societally acceptable manner.

We encourage the submission of both conceptual and application oriented contributions for the following topics (but are not limited to):

Business Models: how can we achieve the sustainability of the "electronic skin" infrastructure?
Cost & performance: which main cost factors exist; how do they scale (e.g. with network size, number of nodes, time, type and quality of observations), and what can be done to optimize the total cost of ownership?

The INSPIRE Conference 2010 will take place from 23 to 25 June 2010 in Krakow, Poland. On 22 June pre-conference workshops will be organized. The theme of this year’s edition is "Spatial Data Infrastructure as a Framework for Collaboration".

The INSPIRE Conference will be organised through a series of plenary sessions addressing common policy issues, and parallel sessions focusing in particular on applications and implementations of SDIs, research issues and new and evolving technologies and applications and poster presentations.

Participation in the INSPIRE Conference is open to all individuals interested in or working in the field of SDI development and implementation. Abstracts must be received by the deadline will be considered for program placement under the standard review process.

The annual "Hydro" conferences are renowned for their high-level international participants from all parts of the world. This year, Soldata will participate on a technical exhibition associated to Hydro conference, and
present the results of the SP6 (Geo Hazards) application to international geotechnics professionals interested in dams, hydrology, tunnels, and foundations building.

OGC Interoperability Day to Feature Role of OGC in EU funded Projects

Bonn, Germany, 31 August, 2009: On Wednesday 30 September 2009 The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC)® will host “EU funded Projects and the OGC: Standards, Benefits and Implementations“, an OGC Interoperability Day to be held at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD), Fraunhoferstrasse 5, 64283 Darmstadt, Germany.

To efficiently deal with societal, environmental and economic challenges in our increasingly complex world, current and accurate information is the single most important aspect. The key that enables such information access in the first place is standardisation. It is the definition of common interfaces and terminology between heterogeneous systems that enables interoperability. A decision maker who needs to to retrieve information shouldn’t need to know about the underlying nuts and bolts of distributed and often proprietary IT solutions.

Geospatial information is playing an increasingly integrated role in mainstream IT. On regional, national and pan-European levels, Spatial Data Infrastructure projects have been implemented to guarantee an efficient and effective use of geographical information to face these challenges. The OGC’s international standards enable interoperabilty between geospatial systems and facilitates the seamless integration of these systems into mainstream IT solutions.

The European Commission long ago anticipated the relevance of geospatial information as a core buidling block for a well informed information society and funded a great number of related projects in the framework programmes. Through direct as well as indirect involvement in several of these projects, many European agencies and companies have introduced geospatial interoperability into the standardisation process. Likewise, many project partners have learned about the benefits of actively engaging in the standardisation process and becoming Consortium members.

Interfacing Modelling and Simulation with Mathematical and Computational Sciences

MSSANZ and IMACS bring together a broad spectrum of scientists who apply
mathematical modelling, simulation, statistical, engineering, spatial and computer science methodologies and skills in solving practical problems coming from a wide range of endeavours including:environmental and global change modelling, water resources management, health care, biological simulation and engineering.

For them, the practical matter under investigation and the available data are the driving forces behind the methodology chosen for the task, or in developing techniques required to analyse new models.

The Congress is the first time MSSANZ and IMACS have combined their meetings and it is sure to provide a rich forum for the exchange of knowledge about modelling and simulation.

The European conference Towards eEnvironment is dedicated to information exchange among public administrations, EU institutions, environmental agencies, scientists and businesses involved in developing and using environmental informatics for the delivery of modern eEnvironment services in Europe. Modern societies establish socio-economic or industrial metabolisms to supply the need of their inhabitants. In this perspective sustainability can be taken as an overall concept to maintain the socio-economic metabolism in the long run, e.g., sustainable use of resources and energy, impacts of products and processes on climate, climate change impacts on value chains etc.

To monitor actual condition and development of metabolisms with aid of metabolic key indicators, various complementary modeling approaches are required, e.g. continuous and discrete event simulation, material flow analysis, often based on spatial data, life cycle assessment, environmental risk management, environmental management accounting. The approaches demand sophisticated data processing techniques and computer-based information systems, for instance process simulation tools, computer- based environmental accounting systems, geographical information systems, visualization tools, reporting modules, as much as possible integrated into a consistent modeling framework.

The EnviroInfo 2008 conference aims to facilitate exchange of experience and knowhow between academics, and professionals in this research field. It will focus on “environmental informatics and industrial ecology”. This indicates that the conference also should make a contribution to bring together the different research communities and to stimulate inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration and research projects in this field.

Arc Manche conference

The Arc Manche Assembly is a maritime network of French regions and English local authorities bordering and in the Channel Area. (Cornwall to Kent and Brittany to Nord-Pas de Calais). All levels of government and public bodies are represented.

On 3 December 2008 the Assembly will be hosting a conference in Folkestone UK entitled Adaption to Climate Change – Channel Communities in a Changing Economic Tide at which all aspects of the effect global warming on the Channel's coastal environments and its communities will be considered. The conference is unique in its focus on the effect of climate change on Channel communities and the debate will be based on modelling information from the UK Climate Impact Programme, in connection with relevant socio- economic information.
