02: Spacebel (BE)

SPACEBEL was established in 1988 in order to promote and develop, within the space industry, the ICT skills available in Belgium, and to reinforce the presence of the Walloon industry in space. Since its creation SPB has gradually expanded with, nowadays, offices in Belgium (Liege and Hoeilaart), France (Toulouse) and Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City). Initially focused onto the space activities, SPB has contributed to the success of numerous programs of the European Space Agency.
In 1998, SPB extended the scope of its space activities to include Geo-Management and Earth-Observation services when DA VINCI was merged with SPB. Today, SPB markets decision support systems for territory and environment management using Earth Observation data.

Role in SANY IP:
SP3 architects and integrator. Leader of SP3.

Other projects / IPs with Spacebel's participation:

  • MASS/SSE - ESRIN has put in operation the Service Support Environment (SSE, see http://services.eoportal.org) in 2004. The SSE is a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) facilitating access to and deployment of services and combining services using workflow technology. Being open, interoperable system based on widely accepted standards from W3C, OASIS, WSI and OGC, SSE is of direct interest for the current project.
  • EOLES - (Earth Observation Linking SMEs to face real time natural disaster management) is a CRAFT project funded by the EC in the IST framework programme (See http://www.spacebel.be/eoles.html), In this project, additional services are being developed that will eventually be plugged in a thematic MASS Portal.
  • MEKOWALM – The project aims at promoting the investigation and design of a flooding management system combining an Earth Observation-based layer and a GIS database of the water level for the annual flooding area in Mekong delta, with as finalization developing operational services to the user community.
  • DMV – The goal of the study consisted in establishing the potential use of satellite remote sensing notably with radar imagery and it interferometer derived products in order to identify earthen dyke vulnerability in North Vietnam.
  • DECIDE - Belgium Flood project (Earth Observation Technologies for DECIsion Support DEmonstrations - The Flood Case) funded by the European Space Agency (ESA/ESRIN) aims at promoting the integration of an Earth Observation-based layer as support to an existing and operational user DSS applied to the flood disaster management.
