The Umweltbundesamt GmbH (UBA) is the expert authority for environmental protection and environmental control of the Austrian federal government, which has a 100% ownership of the UBA. The Environmental Control Act of 1998, which conferred the legal status of a limited liability company (GmbH) to the UBA, stipulates the tasks of the Umwelt¬bun¬desamt. Apart from work for the federal government, the Umweltbundesamt is also entitled to carry out tasks for third parties that are in the general interest (Environmental Control Act § 6 (1) d).

More information:
As the only expert institution in Austria that deals with all areas of environmental protection, UBA currently employs more than 300 experts in environmentally relevant departments. More than 30 IT-experts provide services to internal and external customers (analyses, design and implementation of environmental as well as geographical information systems; user support and IT operation).
UBA is also a partner of many international organisations such as the EU Commission, the European Environment Agency, UNEP, OECD and ECE.
Within the scope of environmental control, the UBA records, analyses and evaluates data on the state and development of the environment in all areas. Every three years the State-of-the-Environment (SoE) Report which covers all environmental media is produced. This Report describes the state and development of the environment in Austria and is submitted to the Austrian National Assembly.
The purpose of the work carried out by the UBA is primarily to support the environmental policy of the federal government, which is supplied by the UBA with a wide range of information on the sources of environmental pressures and on ways of preventing or reducing such pressures. The UBA also produces proposals for technical-ecological rules and guidelines.
