SANY project skeleton

SANY results and its impact are reflected in two ways. First, standardisation will be at the core of the project, and not just be an add-on. Thus the project contributes directly to the in-situ parts of GMES, networking of sensors. Secondly, validation sub-projects in the domains of air pollution, marine risks and geo-hazards are targeted to produce re-usable services for GMES end users. These services shall comply and/or interface with the major on-going infrastructure standards developments (INSPIRE, ORCHESTRA, ESA Heterogeneous Missions Accessibility) as well as with emerging international standards. The main goal of this approach is to contribute to one standardised European information infrastructure which emerges from all standards initiatives currently undertaken. The selection of partners was heavily influenced by this general approach.

SANY is composed of seven sub projects. The sub projects are the following ones:

SP1: management and exploitation
SP2: sensor networks
SP3: sensor fusion and decision support
SP4: air pollution risks
SP5: marine risks
SP6: geo hazards
SP7: community building and standardisation

SP2 is the sub-project which will produce the innovation-related results which directly reflect the goal of Call 5 in the area of in-situ sensor networks. SP4, SP5 and SP6 will serve two purposes: they will be used to validate the results of SP2, thus demonstrating the usability of SP2 results and they will build services for GMES end users in three different application domains. Thus the project contributes in two ways to GMES: to the in-situ infrastructure itself and to GMES services for end users.

SP3 will provide a platform for decision support which makes use of SP2 sensor services to capture sensor information. SP4, SP5 and SP6 will use this decision support platform to implement their thematic end user services applications. Thus SP3 also has a double role: to help validate SP2 sensor services and to serve the validation SP’s as a platform to implement decision support applications.

The following figure demonstrates the relationship between these technical SP’s. Reading the red arrows in the opposite direction provides the validation of SP2 results by the other technical SP’s.

SP7 will be the information, communication and standardisation platform to maximise the exploitation of SANY results and the impact of the project at European scale, both for the infrastructure-related parts and for the application-related parts.
